Break at Lauriston Castle

DATE: Sunday 26th April 2009

TIME: Meet at 9.45 a.m for 10.00 a.m. start. 3 hour leisurely cycle ride including rests & a coffee break.

STARTING POINT: Water of Leith Visitor Centre.

ROUTE SUMMARY: This ride offers a relaxed cycle, largely away from traffic exploring places of interest on the west of the city.

DISTANCE: Approximately 10 miles.

DETAILS: The route out will be via Redhall Bank Road and Bogsmill, then following the Water of Leith past the remains of some of the 140 or so mills which once lined the banks of and drew power from this waterway. We follow the path to Balerno where it finishes and drop down Newmills Road and Long Dalmahoy Road to approach Heriot Watt University from the West where we will stop for lunch. The route home is along quiet lanes and cycle paths through Baberton and Clovenstone to Murrayburn then back along the Union Canal to the Water of Leith centre.

For lunch there's a cafe at the University with varied food, or you can bring your own sandwiches to eat beside the loch.

No need to book. No charge. Just turn up.

Maggie is unavailable to lead the next few rides for personal reasons, but will return when possible. Until further notice please contact Neil Roberston if you have any queries: Mobile: 07884-488682 or House: 0131-664-2131.
